James Suckling 91pt

This has notes of green olives, currants and salted plums, with some dill. Medium-bodied, fresh and gently chewy with pretty herb undertones.

Wine Spectator 91pt

A polished red, with kirsch and red licorice flavors accented by ground clove and pepper, dark chocolate and medicinal herb notes. Medium- to full-bodied, with fine, chalky tannins and lively orange peel acidity. Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-harvested in small crates and then selected by bunch and berry on sorting tables so that only grapes in perfect conditions of health and ripeness are allowed to continue to the next phase of vinification. Fermented in small stainless steel truncated-cone shaped tanks with long macerations and continuous pumping-over of the must to achieve better color extraction. Malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels sourced from the Tronçaise forests. Aged 14 months in Tronçaise French oak barrels and eight months in Russian oak barrels from the Caucasus. 20 months' bottle conditioning.

Description

Vina Lanciano is the basis for the winery's original philosophy. Its name reflects the essence of a unique enclave, embraced by the river. A magical location, where the vestiges of ancient history lie, such as the remains of the Roman Mantible bridge, which are featured on its label. Viña Lanciano has encapsulated LAN's philosophy and expertise from the outset. The fruit comes from a selection of vines more than 30 years of age located in their Viña Lanciano single vineyard, picked and sorted by hand.

Tasting notes

Bright cherry red with a violet rim. Elegant aromas of red fruits in liqueur and black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant), enveloped in spiced notes of clove, cinnamon and vanilla, alongside the minerality that is the hallmark of all the wines that come from the “Viña Lanciano” estate. Perfumed hints of violets can also be appreciated. Intense aromas with the texture of ripe, sweet tannins on the palate. A remarkable wine with a distinguished character.

Estate

Founded in 1972, Bodegas LAN lies in the heart of Rioja Alta. The name LAN comes from the initials of the three provinces of the Rioja Designation of Origin: Logroño, Álava and Navarra. María Barua has been the head winemaker and technical director since 2002 and brings both scientific expertise (with an academic background in chemistry in addition to her oenology degree) and local knowledge (having been born and raised in Rioja). Together with her young and energetic team, María focuses on using the latest advances in winemaking to ‘express the virtues of the land’.
