James Suckling 93pt

This is quite bold and youthful at this stage, as the notes of coffee and spices are not yet integrated with the ripe fruit, which is slightly baked. The notes of cherry liqueur, violets, dried herbs, peppercorns, minerals and bramble berries will open up with more time in the glass. Full-bodied and very chewy on the palate, but the tannins are really open-grained and tightly wound. Vertical, powerful and long, with a slightly warming finish. This needs at least four more years, but there is potential. A bit more freshness and precision would take it to the next level.

Estate

Originally known as the Cooperatia de Pañafiel in the year 1927, the Bodegas Protos winery was the first winery of the Ribera del Duero. This project started with the union of some of the best Spanish winemakers at the time and through their grand efforts and perseverance for each wine vintage, they became one of the best wineries of Spain. The name “Protos” comes from Greek to mean “first.” This name brings back the fact that they were the first winery of Peñafiel, Spain, founding the winemaking of the Ribera.

Description

Elegant and complex, the 2016 Selección El Grajo Viejo (single vineyard) is Bodegas Protos’ most exclusive wine, a pure expression of its terroir from the Ribera del Duero. Recently rated 95pts from Wine Spectator, it is produced from 70+ year old vines of Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo). It is hand-harvested and aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months and a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. This is a wine not to be missed!
