Product Ratings
Vinous Media 91pt

The 2023 Tinto Fino Protos is 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero and was aged for up to eight months in oak. Aromatically intense, it offers bright fruit, plum, underbrush, noticeable oak and a hint of rosehip. The palate is creamy, with fine tannins and juicy flow, finishing with a lightly herbal touch. Textbook Ribera with a modern wink.

James Suckling 90pt

Lightly spiced plums, dark cherries and touches of graphite and black pepper on the nose. Good, pristine fruit with powerful but dusty tannins on the palate. Medium- to full-bodied with a vertical, medium-length finish.

by James Suckling, 2025
Wine Enthusiast 90pt

A reserved nose hints at blackberry and blueberry. The palate is fresh and upfront, offering everything at once. A solid choice for a straightforward pairing.

Vinification

12 months in (60%) French and (40%) American oak barrels. Both processes, the fermentation and maceration, were carried out in stainless steel vats at 28 degrees Celsius to obtain color and structure.

Tasting notes

Ruby in color with a purple hue. Black fruit aromas, well balances with the oak, bringing sweet spicy and nice toasty notes. Good structure taste. Tasty, sweet, well balanced, with pleasant smooth tannins and toasty reminders on the finish.

Estate

Originally known as the Cooperatia de Pañafiel in the year 1927, the Bodegas Protos winery was the first winery of the Ribera del Duero. This project started with the union of some of the best Spanish winemakers at the time and through their grand efforts and perseverance for each wine vintage, they became one of the best wineries of Spain. The name “Protos” comes from Greek to mean “first.” This name brings back the fact that they were the first winery of Peñafiel, Spain, founding the winemaking of the Ribera.
