Wine Advocate 94pt

The estate's flagship wine, the 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino, wraps around the palate with serious depth in its layered, expressive fruit. Smoke, tobacco, leather, savory herbs, wild flowers and incense are some of the many aromas and flavors that emerge over time. A big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2007 has enough sweetness to be enjoyed today, but it can also be cellared. The style is built on power and virility but also with hits of rusticity and gaminess that are not uncommon in this part of Castelnuovo. Readers will be rewarded by giving the Schiena d'Asino considerable air.

Estate

Mastrojanni has been writing history with its wines since 1975, collecting awards from all over the world. Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and men who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni has become one of the most respected Montalcino producers. The Mastrojanni winery lies in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the south eastern most corner of Montalcino Municipality, in the Province of Siena. An artistic and architectural heritage, surrounded by the majesty of its natural landscapes and, above all, an area particularly suitable for vine cultivation: the homeland of Brunello.

Tasting notes

From one of Montalcino’s most celebrated single-vineyards, the Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d’Asino (“donkey’s back”) comes from a one-hectare hillside crest that runs roughly south to north and enjoys magnificent exposures. This is a seriously elegant and sophisticated effort with gorgeous layering that sees plush fruit pitted carefully next to savory spice and smoke.
