Product Ratings
Vinous Media 93pt

Full ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of dark fruit preserves, incense and smoky Indian spices, with a mineral element adding vivacity. Stains the palate with intense black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors, with a spicy element providing lift. Sappy and pliant on the finish, which hangs on with noteworthy tenacity and building sweetness.

Wine Advocate 95pt

The 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac is brilliant, and checks in near the top of the vintage. Made from 100% Grenache, it gives up loads of kirsch, sweet black cherries, crushed flowers and spice aromatics. Full-bodied, beautifully structured, with building tannin and a seamless, layered feel, it can be enjoyed anytime over the coming 10-12 years. There are only 850 cases, and as always, elegance and balance are the name of the game here.

Estate

With roots dating back to 1808, M. CHAPOUTIER is one of the oldest companies in the Rhône Valley. Yet, its world renown and the quality of wine can truly be accredited to the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990. His willingness to change the set way, thirst for knowledge and open-mindedness, together with his drive to seek, discover and reflect the full potential of our terroirs, letting the soils express their true character, has put our wines firmly on the wine world map. This philosophy is what gives our wines their signature style, forms the basis of the M. CHAPOUTIER ethos and drives our team to reveal the very best of what the soils have to offer.

Vinification

Grenache, being sensitive to oxidation, vinifications are made in concrete tanks. Fermenting lasts about 3 weeks (which allows a polymerization of tannins) with a temperature which varies between 30 and 33°C. Only the free-run wine is used in this single vineyard. Matured in vats for 16 months. Demeter certified Biodynamic.

Tasting notes

A pure and intense wine of 100% old-vine Grenache, this unique hilltop vineyard west of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape makes some of the silkiest and most elegant wines in the region. Its biodynamic viticulture ensures the low yields necessary to create an intense Grenache-only wine, and its late picking contributes to the development of exotic aromas in a very full-bodied and long flavored wine.

Vineyard

Quaternary terrace with a surface of shingles coming from the former bed of the Rhône. The parcel producing this single vineyard has a complex and various geological composition. Vines are 90 years old.
