Product Ratings
James Suckling 91pt

A chalky, serious and engaging red with red berries, wafers and warm spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins. Fruity and structured, with a generous finish. Drink or hold.

by James Suckling, 2025
Wine Spectator 93pt

A stream of silky cherry, spices and toasted anise glides through in this stylish, ripe Chateauneuf. Glossy in feel, with a well-meshed kiss of vanilla, lavender and apple wood smoke seamlessly integrated. Keeps nice purity, lightness and energy in spite of its generosity and ripeness. Grenache and Syrah.

Description

Secret Barville, is the secret know-how of the Brotte family who are descendants of the Barville line. Wishing to create a wine that is both complex and powerful, they have selected three of the best Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard sites. To the West of the village, ‘Beaurenard’, with its clay and limestone, develops the freshness of Syrah. In the Southeast, “Panisse” and “Bois-Dauphin”, with their sandy soils (covered with pebbles for the latter) develops the finesse of Grenache and Mourvèdre. This is a wine with great character and is the result of a unique collaboration of grape growers, aiming at revealing the exceptional personality and quality which is expressed by each site.

Food pairing

Enjoy with roasted meat, foie gras, chicken stew with black olives, a platter of strong cheeses or with a chocolate mousse.

Tasting notes

Color: Ruby tinged with purple highlights.
Nose: Lots of finesse with hints of warm spices, black fruits (cassis, blackberry, cherry) along with roasted notes and red peppercorns.
Palate: Elegant with forest fruits dominating the front palate. A rich mouthfeel is underlined by vanilla tones and supple tannins. Exceptional length promises great ageing potential.

Vinification

Sustainable viticulture is the focus with de-budding, de-leafing and green harvest to limit the yield and increase the quality. Hand harvesting in small crates to avoid berries’ crushing. De-stemming and sorting is followed by a natural fermentation and maceration of around 4 weeks. Cap plunging is carried out manually (no pump). The juices are funneled into French oak barrels (1yr old), where they age 18 months. The wine is bottled by gravity without filtration.
